Friday 22 January 2010 - First tablets to fight multiple sclerosis 'dramatically reduce relapse'

The treatments will allow patients to escape the need for painful and time consuming injections or regular hospital infusions. New research also Jordan 21 hows that they cut the risk of symptoms worsening by around a third. The MS society has hailed both treatments, the first ever pills for the condition, as a breakthrough in the management of the disease. The debilitating condition is caused by the destruction of myelin, a fatty protective sheath surrounding the body's central nervous system. Sufferers disabled experience difficulty walking or speaking and there is currently no known cure for the disease, which affects around 85,000 people in Britain. Dr Doug Brown, from the MS Society, said: "This is great news for people with MS and signifies a shifting tide in the treatment of the condition. "Availability of oral therapies will give people greater choice and being able to take a tablet instead of unpleasant injections will come as welcome relief.” One, fingolimod, taken daily, cut the risk of Jordan 22 relapse in half when tested against the current standard treatment, interferon, the studies, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, show. The other, cladribine, taken between eight and 20 times a year and initially developed to treat leukaemia, had similar results when tested against a placebo. Both pills are expected to come on the market next year. Prof Gavin Giovannoni, from the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary, University of London, who led the cladribine study, said: " We think ours has the advantage because it only has to be taken a few times a year – instead of every day which is the case with fingolimod. “Cladribine will make a major difference to people with MS and we hope it will be available to patients by the summer." He added that MS was becoming more common, especially among women, in part because of smoking as well as vitamin D deficiency, caused by changes in the diet and increased use of sunblock. Dr Richard Nicholas, consultant neurologist at London's Charing Cross Hospital, said: "Fingolimod is the only oral MS treatment to have published head-to-head data that demonstrates superiority versus a current standard of Jordan 23 are, providing compelling evidence for this promising new drug.” He added: “This means that patients treated with fingolimod are less likely to experience a relapse, less likely to experience disability progression and don’t need to inject into muscle each week. This has the potential to change people’s lives." The cladribine study looked at 1,184 patients over two years and the fingolimod trials at 1,033 also over two years. Wednesday 13 January 2010 - Food Makers Quietly Cut Back on Salt

Amid rising government pressure and consumer concern, food makers are taking a new tack in their long-running effort to sell products with less salt. Instead of offering foods labeled as low salt that few people eat, they are gradually reducing the salt from some of their most popular items—and not making a big fuss about it on the label. By next summer, ConAgra Food Inc.'s Chef Boyardee canned pasta will have decreased its sodium by about 35% over the course of five years ED Hardy Belts without a word on the package. Campbell Soup Co.'s original flavor of V8 100% vegetable juice also silently dropped its sodium by 32% over eight years. For decades, new reduced-sodium products often had dramatic reductions of at least 25% from their original version to meet government regulations on advertising sodium declines. Those products often tasted different, and sales typically were slim. So food makers in recent years have adopted a new strategy: decrease sodium so slowly that customers don't notice it. "If you gradually move sodium down in products, the consumers that use those products get used to them still tasting good but at lower salt," says Douglas Balentine, Unilever NV's North American director of nutrition and health. Government health experts for years have been counseling people to eat less sodium, and now pressure is building to tighten restrictions on food makers. New York City, leading a group of cities and health organizations, on Monday announced voluntary sodium-reduction targets for restaurants and food makers. It wants to lower Americans' salt intake by at least 20% by 2014, but unlike the city's ban on trans fat in restaurant food or rules ED Hardy T shirt requiring eateries to post calorie info, the salt-lowering initiative is voluntary. The British government initiated a similar program several years ago. Many food-industry executives also expect the U.S. government's Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee this year to recommend that Americans consume less sodium than it recommended in 2005. Decreasing salt is one of the thorniest challenges in food science. Salt is an inexpensive ingredient that enhances sweetness and diminishes bitterness in flavors. It keeps packaged foods fresh longer, plumps up canned vegetables and helps hold together hot dogs. Reducing sodium can be expensive, often involving wholesale product reformulations. Salt replacements are "never cheaper than sodium chloride, unfortunately," says Bob Eilerman, head of science and technology for Givaudan SA, a Swiss flavor company. So far, the food industry's efforts on sodium don't appear to have dented the amount of sodium in the packaged foods Americans most commonly purchase. Sodium in those foods has stayed flat since 1991 at an average of about 2,000 milligrams of sodium per pound of food, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of government data tracking a representative sample of foods Americans eat. Robert Earl, vice president of nutrition at the Grocery Manufacturers Association, an industry trade group, says that other government data on sodium per calorie consumed has stayed about level over time. Still, the world's largest food makers continue to work on the problem. In October, ConAgra said that by 2015 it would lower the sodium level in about 80% of its products by an average of 20%. Sara Lee Corp. made a ED Hardy swimsuit similar commitment in December. Campbell Soup, which has focused broadly on reducing sodium for at least a decade, says it has already reduced sodium in the top-selling products in all its categories by nearly 24% since 2001. Food company executives say that gradually lowering salt has helped ensure that consumers keep buying the products. Sales of V8 juice have held up well, says a Campbell Soup spokeswoman. Wednesday 6 January 2010 - Study: Antidepressant lift may be all in your head

A small new study provides more evidence that, on average, antidepressants may be little more effective than a sugar pill in most patients who take them. "I think we've made decisions (about how to treat depression) more difficult," says co-author Robert DeRubeis, a Fishing Lure psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania. The findings are published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association. "I hope we have." ANTIDEPRESSANTS: Number of Americans taking them doubles Antidepressants are among the most-prescribed drugs in the USA. More than 164 million prescriptions were dispensed in 2008, according to IMS Health. DeRubeis' team pooled data from six trials in which a total of 718 depressed patients were randomly assigned to take either an antidepressant or a placebo. The authors obtained patient-specific data from scientists involved with each trial. Antidepressants were more effective than a placebo only for patients with very severe depression, who made up 40% of trial participants but, according to a recent survey cited in DeRubeis' paper, represent fewer than 30% of depressed people who seek treatment in the real world. "The health Fishing Reel establishment needs to take stock and ask about costs and benefits" of antidepressants, DeRubeis says. Meanwhile, he says, his study "should give one pause" about prescribing antidepressants to mildly, moderately or even severely depressed patients. Instead, he says, doctors might want to consider non-drug options, such as exercise or psychotherapy. PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS: Conflicts of interest bedevil research In a statement, Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Karen Riley called DeRubeis' paper "useful." "But every patient is different, and translating these findings into clinical practice is yet another challenge," Riley added. "Some modestly ill patients will still benefit from drug treatment, while some very severely ill patients will not." A larger study published in February 2008 reached conclusions similar to those in DeRubeis' paper. In the 2008 study, researchers pooled data from all clinical trials submitted to the FDA for the licensing of Prozac, Serzone (no longer on the market), Effexor and Paxil. Such findings Fishing Buoy "demonstrate a failure in the system: These drugs were not thoroughly tested in mild to moderate depression prior to their approval," says Thomas Moore, a senior scientist at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices in Horsham, Pa., and co-author of the 2008 paper. "Any new antidepressants should be." Inflatable Boats air jordan shoes sale uggs ED Hardy Belts ED Hardy T shirt

Tuesday 5 January 2010 - 'We seek sanctions on Iran gov't to avoid harming civilians'

WASHINGTON - The US is seeking sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and other Iranian government elements to Wholesale Brand Wallets avoid hurting ordinary civilians, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday. The Obama administration has been tight-lipped about what punitive measures it would seek against Teheran, should diplomacy prove ineffective at preventing it from enriching uranium, as Iran rejected international deals for compromise. Clinton's statement Monday highlighted what she called the goal of these sanctions, as the US looks at ratcheting up pressure on Teheran, while trying not to hurt reformists demonstrating against the regime, which she accused of carrying out "ruthless repression." Clinton also acknowledged that diplomatic efforts had not yielded the results the administration was looking for, saying that "the results of our efforts to engage Iran directly have not been encouraging." She added that the US was "disappointed" by the Iranian rejection of the international proposal, whereby the Islamic Republic would have shipped much of its low-enriched uranium abroad for processing. "We have already begun ED Hardy discussions with our partners and with like-minded nations about pressure and sanctions," Clinton said. "Our goal is to pressure the Iranian government, particularly the Revolutionary Guard elements, without contributing to the suffering of ordinary [Iranians], who deserve better than what they currently are receiving." While Israel is pleased to see the US engaging international allies on enhanced sanctions, and see the Guards as a crucial target given its role in military actions at home and abroad, more focused measures fall short of the "crippling sanctions" ED Hardy Jeans Israel has said it would like to see. In addition, Clinton stressed that opportunity to choose diplomacy was still there and that the US doesn't use the term deadline when speaking of its Iran posture. Monday 23 November 2009 - Michael Jackson's glove sells for $350,000 at auction

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's famous white glove sold for $350,000 at a memorabilia auction on Saturday, soaring far past pre-sale estimates, while a black jacket he wore during a 1989 world tour fetched $225,000. The Jackson memorabilia was the highlight of an auction of hundreds of rock'n'roll items, including nike air force 1 many not associated with the "King of Pop," who died in June. Darren Julien, CEO of Julien's Auctions, which ran the auction, called the glove "the Holy Grail of Michael Jackson," and many expected it to sell for far more than its pre-sale estimate of about $50,000. With the added commission, the final price excluding taxes, ran to some $420,000. The buyer was Hong Kong businessman Hoffman Ma. Bidding for the black, strap and zipper-laden jacket Jackson wore during the 1989 "Bad" tour soared to $225,000, more than 20 times its estimate. With commission, the tab came to about $275,000. Fans and dealers turned out at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square for the sale that included a car driven by Jackson, as well as David Bowie's guitar and memorabilia from the Beatles to Bo Diddley. "I never got to see Michael, and now that he's gone this is the closest I could get," said Jazmynn Wholesale Brand clothing Moore, 19, a student from Manhattan. The glove was worn by Jackson when he first staged the famous moonwalk dance at the 1983 Motown 25 television special. The opening bid of $10,000 leaped immediately to $120,000 before peaking at $350,000. Most of the 80 Jackson lots consisted of items that came from friends and family to whom Jackson had given them, the auctioneer said. Jackson was somewhat of a collector himself, having paid more than $1.5 million for the "Gone With the Wind" best picture Oscar statue at Sotheby's auction, one of the highest prices ever paid for memorabilia at auction. The auction house had valued the Jackson collection at $80,000 to $100,000. But Julien said such pre-auction estimates were intentionally conservative to help generate interest. Many of Jackson's items sold for 10, or even more than 20 times the estimates. Julien's had been preparing for a huge auction of Jackson memorabilia in April that was canceled after an agreement with Jackson, who had filed a lawsuit demanding the return of certain items. During the promotion for Wholesale Brand T-shirt Series that sale, Julien's had amassed a large database of Jackson collectors from Asia to the Americas, and many of the winning Internet bidders were from Japan or Hong Kong.

Friday 20 November 2009 - China puts dissident from U.S. on trial after Obama leaves

BEIJING (Reuters) - A student leader of China's 1989 pro-democracy movement who has long lived in the United States went on trial in China on Thursday, a day after U.S. President finished a visit that raised human rights. Zhou Yongjun faced fraud charges at the trial in Shehong County in southwest Sichuan province, his long-time girlfriend and a friend at the courthouse told Reuters. Zhou was a leader of the Beijing Students' Autonomous Union in the 1989 protests that ended in a bloody army-led Air Jordan 22 crackdown in the streets around Beijing's Tiananmen Square. He later obtained a green card from the United States, giving him residential rights, but not full citizenship. "I know from the lawyers that he's on trial today, but the whole process has been kept secret. This came out of the blue," Zhang Yuewei, Zhou's girlfriend, said from Los Angeles where she lives. She said Zhou's immediate family had also told her of the trial. "Holding the trial at this time was to show the U.S. President," Zhang said in a separate email. "The Chinese government maybe believes that it has the power and cash to go up against the United States and international society." A friend of Zhou's said she was refused entry to the courthouse, which appeared to be crowded with officials. "They don't want any publicity about this case," said the friend, who gave her surname as Lei but asked that her full name not be reported. Because Zhou is not a U.S. citizen, Washington has scant formal power to intervene, and Chinese authorities have no Air Jordan 13 obligations to tell the United States of any developments. In his public comments throughout his four-day visit to China, Obama raised general hopes for broader human rights in Communist Party-ruled China, but avoided raising specific cases. It was unclear, however, whether he raised such cases in his closed-door meetings with China's leaders. Zhou, 42, was handed to Chinese police by authorities in Hong Kong, leading to his detention for nearly a year, Zhang and Hong Kong rights activists said last month. Lacking a valid Chinese passport, Zhou traveled to Hong Kong with the intention of visiting relatives in China on a Malaysian national's passport in September last year. He faces charges of financial fraud involving a bank in Hong Kong, but Zhang and other supporters say the charges Air Jordan 8 were a pretext to punish Zhou for his years of rights activism.

Thursday 19 November 2009 - Financial reforms grind forward in Congress

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Congress edged closer on Wednesday to creating new government powers to break up giant financial firms, which Europe is already doing, while a U.S. derivatives market crackdown got more complicated. More than a year since the collapse of Lehman Brothers and massive government bailouts of firms such as American International Group, the Congress is slowly working its way through more than a Air Yeezy Shoes dozen financial regulation reform proposals from the Obama administration. The House of Representatives has been up to its ears in debate and amendments for weeks, while the Senate only recently has begun to gear up for tackling the reform agenda. A House committee voted on Wednesday to approve a measure that would empower a new council of government regulators to force divestitures by firms considered "too big to fail" whose collapse could threaten the stability of the economy. With the goal of cutting such troubled giants down to size before they slide into crisis, the House Financial Services Committee voted 38-29 for the breakup power proposal. The European Commission has already approved restructuring plans for a handful of EU financial giants, including Britain's Lloyds Banking and Dutch group ING. As many as 28 more EU firms are being eyed for possible divestitures. The U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp Air Yeezy New style already has power to take over and close insolvent banks. But the proposed authority would be more preemptive and cover "insurance companies, banks, hedge funds, whoever may be in an exposed area of causing systemic risk," said its author, Democratic Representative Paul Kanjorski, head of the House capital markets subcommittee, at a committee working session. The Kanjorski measure was approved as an amendment to a broader bill expected to come up for a full committee vote later, possibly on Friday. A final House vote on financial regulation reform was not expected until mid-December. The Senate Banking Committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday to begin work on a 1,136-page reform bill introduced last week by committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, a Democrat. The measure is likely to undergo weeks of debate as it has little support among Republicans. "We have a lot of reservations on the Republican side," said Senator Judd Gregg in a Reuters Television interview brand clothing on Wednesday. One key point of disagreement is the administration's proposal, backed by Dodd, to form a Consumer Financial Protection Agency to regulate mortgages and credit cards. "I think all Republicans have taken the position that the independent consumer protection agency is a huge mistake," said Gregg, a Republican banking committee member from New Hampshire, who added that Republicans will offer an alternative to Dodd's bill.

Wednesday 18 November 2009 - House Republicans Dispute Claim That Gitmo Relocation Would Be Jobs Engine

House Republicans on Monday disputed claims that moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to rural Illinois would bring thousands of local jobs to the community, saying a proposed detention facility in Thomson would amount to little more than "the new Gitmo." Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., released a statement claiming that a Republican colleague was told in a private Pentagon briefing Sunday that up to 1,500 soldiers would be posted at Thomson brand clothing to guard the detainees, and that the Bureau of Prisons says the plan would only generate between 450 and 500 extra jobs, with no preference given to local residents. "By moving the Al Qaeda core to Thomson along with 1,500 U.S. troops, the United States will publicly brand Illinois as the new Gitmo," he said. Kirk and other Republicans warn that Thomson could become a terrorist target and say the economic benefits would be relatively slight. But Democratic officials in Illinois say the conversion of the near-empty prison in Thomson to a federal penitentiary could pump up to $1 billion into the local economy over four years and generate more than 3,000 jobs. In a reversal of the not-in-my-backyard approach many communities have taken to the idea of housing terror detainees stateside, the thirst for prison-centered employment has caused Thomson and several other towns to plead with federal officials to let Wholesale UGG Boots them become permanent hosts to dozens of alleged killers. The surrounding Big Horn County in Montana has an unemployment rate of 10.2 percent, which approaches Carroll County's. Hardin's got a 460-bed detention center that's been sitting empty for two years. The city argues that the relatively new, modern facility would be easy to upgrade to accommodate the prisoners now in Cuba. And it's remote enough to make escape considerably difficult. The county where Marion is located also has a relatively high unemployment rate, though below the national average, at 9.6 percent, according to September statistics. Housing detainees would entail restoring the medium-security prison to its former high-security status. But the restoration could also bring with it the return of lost jobs. In Standish, the county unemployment rate was a whopping 15.8 percent in September. Local officials there were looking to land a detainee deal to keep their shuttering local prison open, and the facility has been reviewed by prison officials. Florence, which has a lower unemployment rate of 7.7 percent, has also pitched its federal Supermax prison as a potential home for Guantanamo detainees. Prison officials also have looked at the Navy brig in Charleston, S.C. But as the prospect of gainful UGG 5225 Boots Brown Classic Short employment wins over supporters to such host-city plans, several lawmakers say housing detainees locally carries too many risks.

Saturday 14 November 2009 - US swine flu deaths 'near 4,000'

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the new system is based on more precise figures provided by 10 states. The previous estimated death toll from the H1N1 virus in the US was 672. Latest figures show about 22 million brand clothing Americans contracted the virus in six months with some 98,000 hospitalised. "This is just the first six months and I am expecting all of these numbers, unfortunately, to continue to rise," said Dr Anne Schuchat of the CDC. She said that, although still imprecise, the new statistics provide "a bigger picture of what has been going on in the first six months of the pandemic". The CDC now estimates that 3,900 people in the US have died from the virus in the past six months. Dr Schuchat said that in children under 18, an estimated eight million have had swine flu, with 36,000 hospitalised and 540 deaths. The new estimated death toll for children is four times higher than the previous estimate. "We will be updating UGG 5825 Classic Short Boots the toll that the pandemic has taken... about every three to four weeks," she said. However, delivery remained far below initial estimates and expectations, she said. The global death toll from the flu pandemic passed the 6,000 mark last week according to figures from the World Health Organization. The virus emerged in Mexico in April and was declared a global flu pandemic on 11 UGG Boots June.

Thursday 12 November 2009 - Strings attached to stimulus dollars for schools

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is ready to hand out more stimulus dollars for schools, but this time, strings are attached. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said another $11.5 billion is available to states, which have already received more than $67 billion. Duncan said the administration wanted to distribute most of the money quickly to bolster state budgets Ugg Sunburst Tall that have been ravaged by the recession. Now Duncan is making it tougher to get the rest of the dollars because the administration wants states to adopt President Barack Obama's vision of reform. States will have to fill out a far more detailed application that demands information on Obama's broad goals — tougher academic standards, better ways to recruit and keep effective teachers, a method of tracking student performance and a plan of action to turn around failing schools. For example, states will be required to identify their lowest-achieving schools by name and tell the department how, or whether, officials have tried to turn the schools around. States will also be pressed on how many core classes in poorer and wealthier schools are taught by "highly qualified" teachers. This is an effort to make states do a better job of educating poor and minority kids, who are far less likely to have effective teachers. But a children's advocacy group, the Education Trust, said the administration fell short of its goal. Nearly every teacher in the U.S. is deemed "highly qualified," because while federal law says teachers in core subjects must be "highly qualified," states were allowed to come up with their own definitions. "Poor kids and kids of color always get the short end of the stick," said Amy Wilkins, lobbyist for the group, said. "The department managed to use the one metric that Ugg Whitely Boots obscures the difference." A spokeswoman for the department, Sandra Abrevaya, said states are also being pressed on the steps they are taking to make sure disadvantaged kids get effective teachers. Similar strings are attached to a separate $5 million competitive grant program in the stimulus, nicknamed the "Race to the Top" fund, that Obama was promoting in Wisconsin last week. Obama has already coaxed several states to rewrite education laws and cut deals with unions as they compete for the grants. And states can't even apply for them yet; those applications are expected later this week.

Wednesday 4 November 2009 - UPDATE 2-AT&T sues Verizon Wireless over 3G ads

NEW YORK, Nov 3 (Reuters) - AT&T Inc is suing Verizon Wireless in an effort to stop its bigger mobile rival from using "misleading" coverage maps in advertisements that AT&T says are causing it to lose "incalculable market share." According to the lawsuit which AT&T filed in Atlanta federal court, a recently launched ad campaign Ugg Roxy shows maps with white spaces that mislead consumers into thinking AT&T has no network coverage outside of areas where it offers high-speed mobile services, known as third-generation or 3G. But AT&T argued that its customers can "fully use their wireless devices outside of a '3G' coverage area and undisputedly have coverage in areas depicted by white or blank spaces on the maps used in Verizon's advertisements." It asked the court for a temporary restraining order against Verizon Wireless so its rival cannot benefit from the ads while the court sets a date for a preliminary and permanent injunction hearing. Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc said the AT&T suit was without merit. Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Nancy Stark said the ads in question "clearly state" that voice and data services are available outside 3G areas. She said the ads were intended to tell consumers about coverage for smartphones, which are used for data services. Since most of the U.S. population already use cellphones for phone calls, operators are depending on high-speed data service offerings to attract new customers or convince Ugg Nightfall existing customers to spend more money on cell services. AT&T's exclusive U.S. right to sell Apple Inc's iPhone helped the No. 2 U.S. operator to gain market share from Verizon Wireless during the quarter ended in September. But since then, AT&T said the ads launched by Verizon in October have caused it to lose market share. AT&T described how the Verizon ads use maps comparing 3G coverage in the Verizon Wireless and AT&T network, using color to depict areas where each carrier has 3G and blank spaces to in areas where 3G is not available. Because Verizon uses white spaces in its own maps for areas where it has no coverage, consumers are incorrectly interpreting the blank spaces on the AT&T maps to mean it has no wireless coverage in those areas, AT&T said. "Verizon has stepped over the line of legitimate comparative advertising," AT&T said in the lawsuit. The case is AT&T Mobility LLC v. Cellco Partnership, U.S. District Court, Northern District Ugg Classic of Georgia, No. 09-3057. (Reporting by editing by Gerald E. McCormick and Tim Dobbyn)

Wednesday 4 November 2009 - Obama vows to redouble effort on climate change

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President and European Union leaders pledged on Tuesday to redouble efforts for a deal on climate change at a summit in Copenhagen, but gave no details of how to reach that ambitious goal. "We discussed climate change extensively and all of us agreed that it was imperative for us to redouble brand clothing our efforts in the weeks between now and the Copenhagen meeting to ensure that we create a framework for progress," Obama told reporters. The U.N. conference to fight climate change will be held in Copenhagen from December 7 to 18, pitting emerging economic powerhouses China and India against Western industrial nations in the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Obama spoke after a White House meeting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, EU Foreign Affairs chief Javier Solana and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country currently holds the EU's collective presidency. Barroso earlier told reporters not to expect "a full-fledged binding treaty -- Kyoto type -- by Copenhagen." But German Chancellor Angela Merkel told U.S. lawmakers after meeting with Obama earlier on Tuesday that a deal was urgent and there was "no time to lose." Merkel, making the first address by a German leader to a joint session of the U.S. Congress since Wholesale UGG Boots Konrad Adenauer in 1957, was much more specific in what a deal would require. "We need an agreement on one objective -- global warming must not exceed 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 F)," she said. "To achieve this, we need the readiness of all countries to accept internationally binding obligations," she said. In a declaration issued after the U.S.-EU summit, the leaders said they had agreed "to promote an ambitious and comprehensive international climate change agreement in Copenhagen." "Together, we will work toward an agreement that will set the world on a path of low-carbon growth and development, aspires to a global goal of a 50 percent reduction of global emissions by 2050, and reflects the respective mid-term mitigation efforts of all major economies, both developed and emerging," the statement said. The leaders also said they would "work to mobilize" significant financial resources to support climate efforts by developing countries and strengthen efforts to develop strong carbon markets. Work toward a new deal UGG 5225 Boots Brown Classic Short ran into obstacles in the U.S. Senate and at U.N. negotiations that began on Monday in Barcelona, Spain, the last session before Copenhagen.

Tuesday 3 November 2009 - International Alphabets for Some Domains Approved

SEOUL -- The private body that oversees the basic design of the Internet voted Friday to allow Web addresses be expressed in characters other than those of the Roman alphabet, though the change will initially be limited to domains controlled by national governments. The board of directors of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or Icann, adopted the change at the end of its latest semi-annual international gathering. The decision climaxed six years of discussion and technical work. But the change for at least a year or so will only apply to country-code top level domains – those with endings like .us or .cn or .uk, for United States, China and United Kingdom, respectively – that are controlled by governments. Those domains account for about 40% of all Web sites Air Jordan Shoes Michael Jordan Shoes around the world. The rest are generic top level domains, with endings like .com, .org or .net. Access to those domains is obtained commercially and Icann is still developing rules for how multiple-language names will be distributed to them. "This is only the first step, but it is an incredibly big one and an historic move toward the internationalization of the Internet," Rod Beckstrom, chief executive officer of Icann, said in a statement. The organization is a private, non-profit entity that, along with a similar Internet Engineering Task Force, strives to create rules to protect the universality of the data network. During the conference, many business owners and computer scientists urged Icann to also move quickly to adapt more languages and scripts for dot-com, the main domain used by businesses around the world. Icann executives and engineers working on issues related to that change said it is likely to happen in 2011 at the soonest. For the country-code domains, Web addresses will now be able to be expressed in about 16 other alphabets or scripts, including traditional and simplified Chinese characters, Russian Cyrillic, Korean Hangul and Hebrew. Dozens of other alphabets are likely to be added in coming years.

Tuesday 3 November 2009 - Great White nearly bit in half by an even BIGGER monster: Swimmers stay out of the water after warning over giant 20ft shark

A 'monster' great white shark measuring up to 20 ft long is on the prowl off a popular Queensland beach, according to officials. Swimmers were warned to stay out of the water off Stradbroke Island after the shark mauled Air Jordan 23 another smaller great white which had been hooked on a baited drum line. The 10-foot great white was almost bitten in half. The fictional shark at the centre of the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Jaws was estimated to be just five feet longer. 'It certainly opened up my eyes. I mean the shark that was caught is a substantial shark in itself,' says Jeff Krause of Queensland Fisheries. The great white, the most dangerous creature in the sea, was still alive when hauled onto a boat near Deadman's Beach off north Stradbroke island. News of the shocking attack on the smaller shark has sent jitters along the Queensland coast from Stradbroke Island, near Brisbane, to the Sunshine Coast further north down to the tourist mecca of Surfers Paradise, Air Jordan 20 south of Brisbane. 'Whatever attacked and took chunks out of this big shark must be massive,' said 19-year-old surfer Ashton Smith. 'I've heard about the big one that's lurking out there somewhere. 'We're all being very, very cautious.' Mr John Gooding, who operates a charter fishing boat, said sharks were everywhere, although there appeared to be no specific reason for an increase in the number. 'Some days you struggle to get a fish on to the boat before the sharks take them,' he told the Courier Mail Michael Jordan Shoes newspaper.
